Avelyn Angus began in 2005 with the purchase of six heifers from Foxtail Livestock. Two of these became 4-H projects for the kids. Actually we should clarify this. The name Avelyn which is comprised of the last 3 letters of the name Dave and the last three letters of the name Marilyn was decided upon back in 1986 before we were married. In 2005 the change over from mainly commercial cows to slowly building a purebred herd started. Through the years all four of the children Kendra, Wyatt, Sadie and Beth had many female 4-H projects as well as steer projects. The impact of these first females was huge as those originals and their offspring comprise nearly 70% of the entire herd today. |
We have shown at several shows throughout Alberta including Olds Fall Classic, Lloydminster Stockade Round Up, Farmfair International, Camrose Canadian Bull Congress to name a few. From his dairy days Dave has always believed that correct udders as well as feet and legs must be first and foremost in longevity in your cows. We have built a herd around this philosophy and have had many cows survive well into their teens so far.
We use a mixture of artificial breeding as well as embryo transfer on our top end females trying to enhance and grow those families faster. We have always bred for maternal strength and as we built and expanded our numbers and found that great bulls come from within that philosophy as well. We currently sell our breeding bulls, mainly yearlings off the farm by private treaty.
Recently Matt and (Kendra) Fisher have taken up in partnership on several cows starting out as half interest in larger numbers of retained heifers. This has allowed a more rapid expansion for them and us as well. The rest of the family is still involved as well between the showing, the prep for showing as well as calving and it seems like many other activities each year. Family is important to us, and we look forward to the future as now grandchildren are coming more into the picture as well!
